Far from the Capital
Burundi is a small nation in east-central Africa’s Great Lakes region. It’s one of the smallest countries in Africa, is still struggling to recover from decades of unrest, and consistently ranks among the lowest in the world in economic development, hunger, and infant and maternal mortality rates.
In rural areas like Kibuye, access to medical care is extremely limited – far from the hospitals and specialists located in the nation’s capital.
Since 2013, the Serge team in Kibuye has partnered with Hope Africa University and Kibuye Hope Hospital to bring high-quality, compassionate medical care in the name of Jesus to the poor in rural Burundi.
The team also provides clinical training to medical professionals, equipping the next generation of Burundian physicians.
By providing clinical care for patients while also training medical students, the Serge Kibuye team enables Kibuye Hope Hospital to offer a level of specialty care never previously available in this region of Burundi.
About 120 medical students come through the hospital every year, as well as approximately 60 nursing students and 70 allied health students (nursing tech, anesthesia, ophthalmology, etc.).
Students come from countries all over the region. Serge staff offer not only medical training, but also Bible study for those who are interested.
Building the Team
The Serge Kibuye team has grown rapidly in the last few years, but is looking for surgeons (general or orthopedic) willing to serve on a short or long-term basis.
Other physicians (particularly those with previous international experience) are also needed to help provide short-term coverage.
We have an ongoing need for teachers for the children of the mission team.
- For our relationships to grow and flourish with the national leaders of Hope Africa University and Kibuye Hope Hospital;
- For the hospital staff, that they would be the hands and feet of Jesus as they minister to patients, and that the good news of the gospel would go forth in our area;
- For the medical students who come to Kibuye Hope Hospital to grow both professionally and spiritually, as many of them participate in a discipleship program led by the team;
- For peace in this beautiful land.
We have developed a 20-year expansion plan for the hospital, including everything from medical student housing to new wards and operating rooms, paid for through the Kibuye Hope Hospital Fund.
The Kibuye Needy Patient Fund helps to subsidize the cost of medical care for the neediest of our patients at Kibuye Hope Hospital.
Finally, the Kibuye Team Fund is for team projects and expenses, as well as community outreach.
