Vision for London
We hope to see movements of churches peopled by followers of Christ who are Kingdom-minded, open-hearted, and practically skilled, whose involvement is contextualized, sacrificial, joyful, and sustainable.
A Multi-Cultural Hub
London is a vibrant multi-cultural city. Since World War II, millions of poor immigrants representing every populated continent have settled here. A few find a haven but most get a hard-knock financially strapped capital. London’s churches, emptied by the despair following World War I, are weak. Serge’s Apprenticeship seeks to equip and disciple new generations of leadership for desperately needed, kingdom-minded, grace-centered churches here in London and beyond.
The History of the Apprenticeship in London
In the year 2000, Serge admitted its first class of apprentices and soon thereafter began to also train local believers. In 2009, the program moved from Dublin, Ireland to London, where Americans join Brits and other internationals for a one to two year practicum in cross-cultural ministry. By supplying much needed short term workers, we seek to support a growing movement of new churches that serve Christ’s mission of reconciling the world to Himself. At the same time, we’re dedicated to giving our apprentices a solid missional framework, training in practical skills, and support as they transition into cross-cultural and full-on service. We also help them to see how personally laying hold of the Father’s love leads to active kingdom service and freedom to rest. We are learning, along with them, what it is like to lay down our lives for Christ in postmodern Europe.
- Equipping young leaders from many national, ethnic and cultural contexts.
- Supplying like-minded church plants with short-term help.
- Healing cultural breaches by practicing the love of Christ amongst ourselves.
- Teaching apprentices to search the scripture and preach the Gospel to themselves and others daily.
Ministry and Diversity
London is perhaps the most diverse city on the planet. Having such an array of languages, beliefs, and ethnicities makes it a strategic focus for missionaries desiring to reach post-modern Europeans as well as the hundreds of thousands of people who have migrated to London from countries with little or no gospel witness. It’s an ideal location for apprentices to serve with an on-going ministry and at the same time be immersed in the religions and cultures surrounding them.
Dependent on Grace
The London apprenticeship program exists to mentor and disciple the next generation of young people who will further the expansion of Jesus’ global kingdom. The Serge staff who lead the program do not have all the answers, nor are they “expert” missionaries. Rather, they are needy for the gospel and dependent on grace just as you are. It is their vision to walk with you as you encounter new cultures, expand your vision of the Church, learn to share the gospel to other cultures, and even as you encounter bumps (sometimes mountains!) of your own sin lying in the road.
Loving people cross-culturally is a way of answering Jesus’ call to lay down your life for him. You’ll learn this practically and in community by being placed on a specific Serge team. You could live among the alternative, marginalized, and urban poor populations in East London.
Our Vision for Serge London Apprentices
Servants who are becoming Christ-dependent, Spirit-empowered, and passionate for the Kingdom of God – in their home cultures and cross-culturally
An incarnational community where the gospel is lived out as an authentic witness to what we say we believe about forgiveness, unity, and redemption
Ordinary individuals who aren’t afraid to ask the question, “What does it look like to lay down my life?”
Believers who set aside their own cultural trappings in order to see the beauty of God as expressed in other cultures
People living out their calling to BE as well as their calling to DO, who are beginning to understand who God has created and is redeeming them to be
London becoming a city where the Gospel is known and treasured among all its peoples
