With its vibrant and rolling countryside, the small land-locked country of Rwanda in Central-East Africa has become known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills”. Yet the beauty of this place has been marred by conflict, most notably during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in which an estimated 800,000 lives were lost in just 100 days. Since that time, Rwanda’s recovery has been marked by unprecedented economic growth. In 2020, the World Bank named it as the 2nd easiest place in Africa to do business. It also has a growing reputation as a top destination for ecotourism, with opportunities to see rainforests & their wildlife, mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, as well as big game on safari on the savanna. Given its geographical location and rapid economic development, Rwanda is uniquely poised to have a tremendous impact on the Great Lakes region of Africa and beyond.

What We Do in Rwanda – Kigali

The Serge Kigali team’s vision is to empower Africans to be the hands and feet of Jesus for the blind by training, mentoring, and equipping eye care professionals.

–Training ophthalmology residents at RIIO in the 4-year program to be excellent cataract surgeons

–Mentoring these same residents during regular time together serving patients in the clinic and OR as well as through time spent in God’s Word at a regular Bible study

–Equipping RIIO graduates and other African ophthalmologists in the region with the necessary equipment & supplies needed to provide high quality services to the blind poor

In partnership with the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO), the Serge Kigali team is training the next generation of African ophthalmologists to provide high quality, sight-restoring clinical and surgical care in underserved areas. With less than 25 ophthalmologists for a country of 13 million people, the need for more eye surgeons in Rwanda (and the surrounding region) is critical in order to address blindness caused by cataract, glaucoma, trauma, and other eye diseases.
