Teaching Assistant / Medical Vocational Intern – DR Congo – Nyankunde

The Serge DRC team, in both Bunia and Nyankunde, provides medical care under the authority and in partnership with a local Congolese mission, Centre Medical Evangelique. Team members also collaborate with a local medical school to be involved with the training of Congolese doctors. Both sites work to subsidize prices and provide free care for indigent patients, like the thousands of internally displaced persons by war in the region. This team is also committed to evangelism and discipleship, and strives to become embedded in the local community, building relationships with neighbors.

This team has also started an English-speaking co-op for all the missionary kids in their city. It includes Serge families and people from other missionary organizations in the area. There are currently about 15 kids total, ranging from first to eighth grade. This missionary kid education co-op is being completely run by missionary parents, with the help of two local Congolese teachers.

The start date for this internship is flexible, depending on the applicant’s availability.

Responsibilities:

• Support the families of the Centre Medical Evangelique and their home school co-op 
• Develop curriculum and plan lessons 
• Co-teach core subjects such as math, English, science, and social studies, based on qualifications and interest 
• Lead extra-curricular and after-school programming such as specials, PE, theater, art, and music 
• Assist with tutoring when needed 
• Shadow Serge medical missionaries 
• Connect with Congolese medical students

Requirements and Critical Qualities:

• Humble and teachable spirit
• Desire for personal spiritual mentorship
• Flexible and positive attitude
• Interest in education and/or medical missions in a remote setting
• Enjoys working with children and families
• Committed Christian 
• Cross-cultural experience or desire
• Certified teacher, teacher’s assistant, nanny, or childcare professional 
• Willing to learn about teaching within a homeschool setting
• Willing to work with homeschool methods and vision
• Willing to receive positive feedback and constructive criticism
• Willing to raise support and come through a mission agency

Support Raising:

The person in this role raises their full financial support for salary, ministry expenses, and benefits.
When you are appointed to go with Serge, you are assigned a support coach who will guide you step-by-step through the entire support-raising process.
