Uganda — Bundibugyo

long term

In the Beginning

Bundibugyo is location where the first Serge long-term mission team began serving. In the early 1980s, a Ugandan refugee invited the Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia to help rebuild the church after the devastation of the rule of Idi Amin. By the late 1980s, missionaries were living in Bundibugyo and working with the Ugandan Presbyterian Church to plant the churches of the Bundimalinga Presbytery, translate the Bible into the local language of Lubwisi, and to disciple young pastors. By the mid 1990s, Serge’s work became more holistic, addressing the overwhelming material needs of the district in order that the movement of churches begun in 1980s could flourish.

Three Decades of Ministry

For more than three decades Serge missionaries have served in Bundibugyo, in partnership with the local community.  These efforts have led to the founding of Christ School Bundibugyo, a boarding secondary school for Ugandans with over 400 students; the Kwejuna Project, a gravity fed clean water initiative that provides safe water for hundreds of thousands of resident in the districts; and improved local healthcare, both in the national clinics and through the Bundi Nutrition program. Serge’s work with the Bundimulinga Presbytery continues through works of healing and equipping, and ongoing pastoral training at the Semiliki Institute for Theological Education.

Our Work

  • With a translation of the Lubwisi New Testament complete, the team’s direct work with the church primarily consists of ongoing training of young leaders.
  • The team provides health care through the state clinic and works in public health (water project and nutrition for mothers and children).
  • Christ School disciples students towards a kingdom-centric vision of their calling to serve the district and work for the Lord’s peace in a place marked by disease and strife.

Building the Team

We need persons who are interested in living in a close-knit team situation in a remote, but very busy place that is full of daily challenges and demands regular repentance and belief. Many of the ministries of our team are established, but still require great resourcefulness and initiative to maintain. However, the power of the gospel is truly transforming Bundibugyo.
